Let's connect sincerely this year

28 January 2020

The start of the new year is the perfect time to pause and reflect on the past year. To sincerely reflect on ourselves and our surroundings. And that pause can be just as frightening. After all, isn’t pausing the way to regression? Everyday new challenges come our way. The ever-increasing demands, the overstimulation, the high expectations and the changes we face today have a major impact on our well-being. As long as we don’t learn to pause from time to time and connect consciously with ourselves and our surroundings, we will continue to pace, pace without a clear goal, pace without a sense of contribution.

Although technology makes many things possible, genuine connection makes it much more complex. We communicate a lot, a lot, and yet we have lost a large part of our communication skills over the years. When was the last time you deliberately took time to have a conversation with your colleague? When did you really let your feelings be heard? When have you ever taken a vacation without feeling guilty? Things are moving fast, very fast, and we all have to keep up; whether we want to or not. In recent years, a lot of effort has been put into well-being, employee experience, and talent management. Unfortunately, these are often hollow words, words that fit within the theoretical framework and make it seem like there is attention to the human being. If we dig a little deeper, we have to admit that a significant portion of employees feels misunderstood, useless, and alone.

It is urgently time for us as colleagues, managers and organisations to create space for genuine attention and connection. A smile costs nothing and you get so much in return; a statement that many of us have been taught from childhood and yet… where is that smile? Where is that genuine connection, where is that kind “good morning” and “good evening”? Where is that genuine question; how are you doing?

It’s high time we see that connection again as a contribution, as an added value, as something that brings energy. Let’s be honest, it’s much more pleasant to work that way, isn’t it?
