Oxygen for yourself and others!

9 November 2022
Oxygen for yourself and others!  An organisation is only as strong as its weakest link. As a business owner or CEO, you must oversee the entire chain and successfully manage a multitude of departments: production, innovation, HR, sales, marketing … Due to the uncertain climate, combined with increasing workload, even the most resilient people experience stress. Driven by ambition, business leaders often put their own well-being aside. But this can have serious consequences in the long term, both for their own health and that of the company.

In a plane, they don’t just say “put on your own oxygen mask first” for no reason: “Then help others around you”. In a professional setting, that shouldn’t be any different. When you are in charge of an organisation, you can only perform optimally for yourself, your company and your team when you are in your best form. And that’s where things often fall short. Yet thanks to a few simple steps, you can increase your mental well-being.

Focus and awareness

New technologies, innovations, and digitalisation are rapidly evolving the world. Moreover, unexpected crises require flexibility and adaptability. In addition, the boundaries between the private and work spheres seem to be increasingly blurred, making us feel we always have to perform. To make effective and efficient decisions, focus and awareness are needed. The closer we are to ourselves, the better we can make choices and prioritise. To do this, we sometimes need to press the pause button. Mindfulness or meditation can help increase awareness and focus.

Soundboard

An objective and neutral sounding board can offer perspective. Someone who offers a mirror or advice can bring a different perspective to a situation or issue. A coach or mentor can guide you through specific processes to develop insights, awareness, and perspective. This can help you take constructive steps towards personal or professional goals and achieve them.

From the DNA

Employees are the beating heart of every organisation. People who feel good are more efficient, less sick, and stay longer. Mental well-being is not a buzzword; it must be effectively integrated into the company’s DNA. When mental well-being is promoted and encouraged from the top, it is more effective. Therefore, ensure a safe framework with attention and support for mental well-being. Create connection with employees, ensure transparent communication, and listen to their frustrations. Use your own vulnerability as strength and engage with your team. As the CEO, set a good example and dare to speak up about your own pain points. This not only leads to more understanding and goodwill, but also motivates them to open up themselves.

Mental well-being is more important today than ever. So oxygen for yourself and others too! Be aware of it and work on it in a constructive way to provide your company and yourself with sufficient oxygen.
